The original golf course at Beaufort was designed in the early 1990's by Arthur Spring. Tom Mackenzie, of leading International Golf Architects Mackenzie Ebert was commissioned in early 2007 to complete a full redesign of 18 hole Kerry Golf Course. Their brief was to raise the standard of the playability of the course, bringing it up to championship design level and aim at gaining Beaufort recognition as one of the best Southern Ireland Golf Courses.
Over a period of ten years, Mackenzie was invited to advise upon 27 of Golf World's Top 50 courses, including 6 of the 9 Open Championship venues - Royal St. George's, Royal Troon, Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale, Carnoustie and Turnberry. The projects at Royal St. George's, Royal Liverpool and Turnberry involved the major exercise of new green construction as well as general reviews of tee locations and bunker placement and the circulation of spectators during the Open. A love of the landscape and deep appreciation of golf combine in his designs to create courses that sit comfortably in their setting and which offer a wealth of shot-making permutations, particularly around the greens. His natural philosophy is that the best golf courses make the most of the site's existing features and work with the landform.
Commenting on Beaufort Golf resort Tom said, "All golfers love to play golf in beautiful places and Beaufort sits rightfully amongst Ireland's most scenic courses overlooking the spectacular McGillycuddy Reeks"
